Palliative Care is the management of symptoms of any seriously ill patient, at any stage of a life-limiting illness. The goal is to help the patient achieve the best possible quality of life.

Palliative Care gives patients and their families a better understanding of the patient’s medical condition and their choices for medical care. It can also provide relief from difficult symptoms that are related to serious illness.

Through a team approach, the Palliative Care Program seeks to relieve physical and emotional suffering and provide social, psychological and spiritual support.  The team is committed to improving the overall well being of the patient and family, while being sensitive to each individual’s cultural traditions, personal goals, beliefs and values.

The Palliative Care Program can provide support and guidance to patient with a life-limiting illness such as AIDS, cancer, chronic heart failure, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease, dementia or stroke. Palliative Care can begin as soon as a patient is diagnosed and can be provided at the same time as curative or life prolonging treatment.
